In this article 11 sections
  • Alexa+ is included with Amazon Prime and costs $19.99 per month without it in the US.
  • Gemini for Home is free at a basic level, but Gemini Live and spoken automations need Google Home Premium from $10 per month.
  • Switching a home from Google Assistant to Gemini for Home cannot be undone.
  • Your existing speakers and subscriptions should decide your pick more than the AI itself.
  • In the UK, both upgrades are still in early access, so final pricing may change.

For most homes in 2026, AI Alexa (Amazon's Alexa+) is the more capable everyday assistant: it handles follow-up questions, multi-step requests and spoken routines at no extra cost if you already pay for Prime. Google's Gemini for Home is the better fit if you live in Google's apps, but its best features need a Google Home Premium plan.

Both assistants changed more in the past year than in the previous five. Below, we compare them on the four things that matter at home: conversations, routines, device support and real monthly cost. If you also want to see how they stack up against Siri and Copilot on phones and PCs, start with our guide to the best AI voice assistants.

What actually changed: Alexa+ and Gemini for Home

Alexa+

Alexa+ is the new Alexa AI assistant, Amazon's generative AI rebuild of the voice you already know. It became available to everyone in the US on February 4, 2026, and Amazon includes it at no extra cost for Prime members. The big shift is that you can talk to it like a person instead of memorizing exact commands.

In practice, that means asking for a recipe, adding the missing ingredients to your shopping list and setting a timer in one request. It also works in the Alexa app and at Alexa.com, so a conversation you start on an Echo can continue on your phone or laptop. Amazon's Alexa+ availability announcement lists the current US plans.

Gemini for Home

Gemini for Home replaces Google Assistant on Google and Nest speakers, displays, cameras and doorbells. Google started early access in the US in October 2025 and has since expanded it to more countries, including the UK. These AI Google Home features come in layers: the basic Gemini voice assistant is free, while Gemini Live, natural-language automations and AI camera summaries need Google Home Premium.

One detail to know before you upgrade: according to Google's Gemini for Home help page, once your home switches to Gemini, you can't switch back to Google Assistant. The change applies to everyone in the household at once. For background on the model itself, read our explainer on how Google's Gemini works.

Which assistant handles follow-up questions better?

This is where AI made the biggest everyday difference. The old assistants forgot what you said a moment ago. Both new ones remember context, but they put it behind different doors.

  • Alexa+: Follow-ups work out of the box for Prime members and Alexa+ subscribers. Amazon says you can switch topics and come back without repeating yourself, and context carries across Echo devices, Fire TV and the Alexa app.
  • Gemini for Home (free): Handles quick back-and-forth through Continued Conversation, which covers "What's the weather?" followed by "And tomorrow?"
  • Gemini for Home (Premium): Unlocks Gemini Live, a free-flowing chat mode you start by saying "Hey Google, let's chat." It suits brainstorming, homework help or planning a trip out loud.

A useful way to judge either one is a three-step chain from your real life: "What's a good dinner for four with chicken and rice?" then "Make it dairy-free," then "Add what I need to my shopping list." That kind of chain is exactly what Alexa+ was designed for. On Google, the free tier is built for short exchanges, and longer planning belongs in Gemini Live.

Routines and automations: which is easier to set up?

Routines are where a smart home assistant earns its keep: lights that dim at bedtime, a morning briefing, a reminder when the back door is left open. Both platforms now let you describe a routine in plain English instead of tapping through menus.

Alexa+ routines

With Alexa+, you describe what you want, such as "Every weekday at 7 a.m., turn on the kitchen lights and read me the weather," and it sets up the routine. You can still fine-tune triggers and actions in the Alexa app. This comes with Prime or the Alexa+ subscription, with no separate smart home plan.

Google Home automations

Google's version is called Help me create. You describe what you want in the Google Home app, and it drafts an automation you can edit and save. Google lists this as a Google Home Premium feature, so free users still build automations by hand from the app's starters and actions.

Sample requests that work as a starting point on either platform:

  1. "When the front door opens after 10 p.m., turn on the hallway light at 30 percent."
  2. "On weekdays at 6:45 a.m., turn on the coffee maker plug, then play the news in the kitchen."
  3. "At sunset, close the living room blinds and turn on the porch light."

Keep each routine to one trigger and two or three actions at first. Long chained routines are harder to fix when one device drops offline, and it is easier to add steps later than to untangle them.

Device support: will your speakers get the upgrade?

Your existing hardware may decide this for you. Switching ecosystems means replacing speakers, displays and sometimes cameras, so start with what you already own.

Amazon: Alexa+ runs on most recent Echo speakers and displays, plus select Fire TV devices. Amazon's newest models, the Echo Dot Max, Echo Studio, Echo Show 8 and Echo Show 11, were built for it and were first in line in the UK. Support for older Echo models varies, so check the device list in the Alexa app before you buy anything new.

Google: Gemini for Home reaches Google and Nest speakers going back about a decade, but not every device gets every feature. According to Google's Nest community Q&A, Gemini Live works on the Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Audio, Nest Mini (2nd gen) and Nest Hub Max. Older models such as the original Google Home, Home Mini (1st gen) and Home Max get Gemini but not Gemini Live. The Google Home Speaker, which launched in June 2026 at $99.99 in the US and £99.99 in the UK, is Google's first speaker designed around Gemini.

How much does each AI home assistant cost?

Cost is the clearest dividing line. Amazon bundles its AI with Prime. Google bundles its best home AI with either Google Home Premium or a Google AI Pro or Ultra plan. These are US prices from Amazon and Google at the time of writing.

Plan US price What you get
Alexa+ chat Free Limited text chat at Alexa.com and in the Alexa app
Alexa+ with Prime Included in Prime Full Alexa+ for the whole household on devices, app and web
Alexa+ standalone $19.99 per month Full Alexa+ without a Prime membership
Gemini for Home Free Gemini voice assistant and basic device control
Google Home Premium Standard $10 per month or $100 per year Gemini Live, Help me create, 30 days of camera event history
Google Home Premium Advanced $20 per month or $200 per year Standard plus AI camera descriptions, Home Brief and video history search
Google AI Pro or Ultra Separate plan AI Pro includes Home Premium Standard; Ultra includes Advanced

The real math is simple. If you already pay for Prime, the Amazon AI assistant costs you nothing extra. If you already pay for Google AI Pro for Gemini in Gmail and Docs, Home Premium Standard is included, and our breakdown of Gemini free vs paid plans explains what else it covers. If you pay for neither, Google's Standard plan costs about half as much as standalone Alexa+.

UK readers: Alexa+ launched in Early Access on March 19, 2026, free while the program runs. Amazon says it will then be included with Prime or cost £19.99 per month. Google publishes its plan details on the Google Home Premium announcement, but local prices can differ, so check the Google Store for your country before subscribing.

Privacy and control: what to check before you switch

Both assistants send your requests to the cloud for AI processing, which is how they understand longer, messier questions. Amazon also removed the option to process voice requests locally on the few Echo models that offered it in 2025. Before you upgrade, spend five minutes on these settings:

  • Review voice recording history and auto-delete options in the Alexa app or your Google account.
  • Decide who in the household can hear personal results, such as calendar events and reminders.
  • Check camera features: AI descriptions of footage mean an AI model is analyzing that video.
  • Use the physical mic-off switch on speakers in bedrooms and home offices.

Remember that Google's switch to Gemini is one-way for your home. If you would rather keep everything on your own hardware, a self-hosted AI assistant is a hobbyist option, though it takes setup time and won't replace an Echo or Nest out of the box.

Which one should you choose? Picks by use case

The best AI home assistant is usually the one that fits the devices and subscriptions you already have. Here is how we would decide:

  • You have Prime and Echo devices: Stay with Alexa+. You already have the full AI upgrade for free.
  • You use Gmail, Google Calendar and Android: Choose Gemini for Home, especially if you already pay for Google AI Pro.
  • You want no subscription at all: Gemini for Home's free tier gives you more voice AI than classic Alexa, as long as you can live without Gemini Live.
  • You rely on security cameras: Price out Nest cameras with Home Premium Advanced against Ring cameras with Alexa+. Camera AI is the most expensive part of either ecosystem.
  • You are in the UK: Both are still in early access, so wait for final pricing unless you already own compatible devices.
  • You use an iPhone and HomePod: Neither is a perfect fit. See what Apple has delivered in our look at the new Siri.

Most people should not switch ecosystems just for the AI. The real cost of switching is new hardware, and both assistants are getting updates every few months.

Frequently asked questions

Is Alexa+ free?
Alexa+ is free for Amazon Prime members in the US, covering the whole household on Echo devices, the Alexa app and Alexa.com. Without Prime, the full version costs $19.99 per month. Anyone can also try a limited, text-only Alexa+ chat for free at Alexa.com or in the Alexa app. In the UK, Alexa+ is free during Early Access, then included with Prime or £19.99 per month.
Can I go back to Google Assistant after switching to Gemini for Home?
No. Google says that once your home upgrades to the Gemini for Home voice assistant, it cannot switch back to Google Assistant. The change also applies to every speaker, display and person in that home at once. If anyone in your household depends on a specific Assistant feature, test Gemini on a single home setup or wait until the rollout matures.
Do I need a new Echo device to use Alexa+?
Usually not. Alexa+ works on most recent Echo speakers and displays and on select Fire TV devices. Amazon's newer models, such as the Echo Dot Max, Echo Studio, Echo Show 8 and Echo Show 11, were designed for it. Support for older Echo generations varies, so check your device in the Alexa app before buying new hardware just for the upgrade.
Which AI models power Alexa+ and Gemini for Home?
Amazon has said Alexa+ uses several models, including its own Amazon Nova models and models from Anthropic, and picks the right one for each task. Gemini for Home runs on Google's Gemini models, the same family behind the Gemini app. For daily home use, the model matters less than which devices, services and subscriptions each assistant works with.
Can Alexa and Google Home control the same smart home devices?
Yes, many devices work with both. Smart plugs, bulbs and locks that support the Matter standard can be added to Alexa and Google Home, and many older devices offer separate Alexa and Google integrations. Check the box or product page for Matter or Works with Alexa and Works with Google Home before buying, so you are not locked into one assistant.

The bottom line

For most homes, AI Alexa is the easier win in 2026: if you have Prime, Alexa+ gives you natural conversations and spoken routines at no extra cost. Gemini for Home makes more sense if your life runs on Google's apps or you already pay for Google AI Pro.

Your next step: open the Alexa or Google Home app, confirm your speakers support the upgrade, and try three real requests from your daily routine before paying for anything. If you are weighing several AI plans at once, our AI subscription comparison helps you avoid paying twice.
