  • The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 (£1,999) for 256GB and tops out at $3,199 (£3,199) for 2TB.
  • Pre-orders opened October 16 and sales start October 23, 2026, but many delivery estimates stretch into January.
  • You trade Face ID, a telephoto lens and a physical SIM slot for a 7.6-inch folding screen and the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro.
  • Verizon's $10 monthly iPhone Handoff fee only applies if you share one number across two iPhones.
  • Buy now if one device can replace your phone and tablet; wait if you need zoom photos, Face ID or day-one Apple Pencil support.

The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable iPhone: a passport-sized phone that opens into a 7.6-inch screen. It starts at $1,999 (£1,999 in the UK) for 256GB and goes on sale Friday, October 23, 2026. Buy it if you want a pocketable tablet now; wait if you need Face ID, a telephoto camera or a lower price.

iPhone Duo quick start: what to know in 60 seconds

The short version, before the details:

  • Price: $1,999 for 256GB, rising to $3,199 for 2TB. UK prices use the same numbers in pounds.
  • Dates: pre-orders opened October 16, and first deliveries and store sales start October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions, including the US and UK.
  • Design: a 5.4-inch outer screen for one-handed use and a 7.6-inch inner screen that runs two apps side by side.
  • Trade-offs: Touch ID instead of Face ID, no dedicated telephoto lens, eSIM only, and a hefty 254 grams.
  • Availability: stock is tight. Online delivery estimates slipped as far as January within minutes of pre-orders opening.
  • Carrier extras: Verizon will charge $10 a month for iPhone Handoff, an optional feature that shares one number across two iPhones. You do not need it to use a Duo on its own.

Want one soon? Order now rather than waiting for store stock, and read the who should wait section below before you pay.

How much does the iPhone Duo cost?

The iPhone Duo price starts at $1,999 in the US for 256GB, the highest starting price of any iPhone so far. Apple confirmed the base price, the two colors (Star White and Night Sky) and four storage sizes in its iPhone Duo launch announcement, and its online stores list the higher tiers below.

Storage US price UK price Extra over 256GB
256GB $1,999 £1,999 None
512GB $2,199 £2,199 $200 / £200
1TB $2,599 £2,599 $600 / £600
2TB $3,199 £3,199 $1,200 / £1,200

The matching numbers hide one real difference. US prices exclude sales tax, which is added at checkout and varies by state. UK prices already include 20% VAT (value added tax), so £1,999 is the final price.

Budget for extras too. Apple sells a two-part iPhone Duo Case for $79 and an iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand for $129, so a 256GB Duo plus the Folio comes to $2,128 before tax and before AppleCare+.

Which storage size should you choose?

  • 256GB: right for most people who stream media and keep photos in iCloud, whose plans start at $0.99 a month in the US.
  • 512GB: worth the extra $200 if you shoot a lot of 4K video, keep offline maps and downloads for travel, or play large games.
  • 1TB or 2TB: only for creators who film and edit long 4K clips on the phone.

Should you pay in full, finance or lease?

US buyers have three main routes:

  • Apple Card Monthly Installments: $83.29 a month for 24 months at 0% APR. You need an Apple Card and must pick AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon at checkout, but the phone stays unlocked.
  • Apple Upgrade lease: Apple's new US-only leasing program, provided by Klarna. Leases start at $57.99 a month over 24 months. It is a lease, not a loan, so the phone goes back at the end, and ending early can cost you.
  • Carrier installments: often paired with trade-in credits (see below), but they tie you to one network for years.

In the UK, Apple offers 0% APR finance over 30 months through a Flexible Finance Account from Creation, about £66.63 a month for the 256GB model, subject to status. A simple rule: lease if you expect to jump to a second-generation model, and buy outright if you keep phones three years or more.

iPhone Duo release date and pre-order: can you still get one?

The iPhone Duo release date is Friday, October 23, 2026, a month after the iPhone 18 Pro reached stores. The phone ships with iOS 27.1.

Date What happens
September 9, 2026 Apple announces the iPhone Duo
October 16, 2026 Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. Pacific (1 p.m. UK time)
October 23, 2026 First deliveries and store sales in more than 70 countries and regions, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and India
October 30, 2026 Launch in 28 more countries and regions

Demand ran far ahead of supply. Minutes after the iPhone Duo pre-order window opened, Apple's delivery estimates slid into November, then December and January. Since then, some buyers have seen their dates move earlier. Treat whatever your order page shows as an estimate, not a promise.

If you want one sooner, work through these steps in order:

  1. Keep any order you already have. Canceling to chase a store unit usually sends you to the back of the line.
  2. Check your order status every few days. Estimates have already improved for some buyers.
  3. Check in-store pickup in the Apple Store app. Launch stock is limited, so look early in the day.
  4. Ask your carrier. Carriers and big retailers sell from their own stock, so their dates can differ from Apple's.
  5. Skip marked-up resale listings. You lose Apple's return window and risk a locked or secondhand device.

Which iPhone Duo specs actually matter?

These are the numbers that affect daily use, taken from Apple's full iPhone Duo tech specs.

Spec iPhone Duo
Outer display 5.4-inch OLED, 1398 x 2034 pixels
Inner display 7.6-inch folding OLED, 1878 x 2670 pixels, matte nano-texture finish
Chip A20 Pro, the same chip as the iPhone 18 Pro
Rear cameras 48MP Fusion Main with 2x optical-quality zoom, 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide
Front cameras 12MP Center Stage camera on the outside, hidden under-display FaceTime camera inside
Unlock Touch ID in the side button, Apple Watch unlock
Size folded 117.8 x 84.1 x 11.3 mm
Size unfolded 117.8 x 164.6 x 5.2 mm
Weight 254 grams (8.96 ounces)
Battery (Apple's claims) Up to 24 hours typical use; up to 31 hours of video on the inner screen, 44 hours on the outer
Charging 50% in about 20 minutes with a 60W adapter; MagSafe and Qi2 up to 25W
SIM Dual eSIM only, no physical SIM tray
Build Grade 5 titanium, IP68 water and dust resistance

Open, the Duo is 5.2 mm thick, the thinnest iPhone yet. Closed, it is 11.3 mm and 254 grams, so it feels dense in a pocket. Apple says the outer screen gives you 90 percent of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro, which covers texting, paying and photos without unfolding.

The inner screen, which Apple says is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display, is where the Duo earns its price: it runs two apps side by side and becomes a StandBy clock or photo frame when propped up.

What you give up compared with an iPhone 18 Pro

  • Face ID: the Duo uses Touch ID in the side button. You can also unlock it with an Apple Watch.
  • A dedicated telephoto lens: you get two 48MP rear cameras and a 2x optical-quality zoom cropped from the main sensor, not a separate long lens.
  • Physical SIM support: the Duo is eSIM-only worldwide, which matters if you buy local SIM cards when you travel.
  • Day-one Apple Pencil support: it works with Apple Pencil (USB-C), but Apple says that arrives later this year.

Performance is not one of the trade-offs. Gizmodo's review found no meaningful slowdown compared with the iPhone 18 Pro, which makes sense given the shared chip.

What do the first iPhone Duo reviews say?

Reviews landed on October 21, and the consensus is clear: an impressive, fun first-generation product with rough edges.

  • The Verge called it expensive, compromised and sometimes frustrating, yet fun in the way great early-adopter devices are, and compared it to the first MacBook Air.
  • WIRED found that many third-party apps still waste the wide inner screen and suggested waiting a few months for developers to catch up. Apps that have not been updated show black bars on both sides.
  • CNET said the cover screen never felt cramped and praised the matte inner display for reading.
  • 9to5Mac said going back to Touch ID was the hardest adjustment, and that turning on Apple Watch unlock made a big difference.

Battery life lands in the middle. In Tom's Guide's web-browsing battery test, as compiled by MacRumors, the results looked like this:

Phone Tom's Guide battery test
iPhone 18 Pro Max 17 hours 31 minutes
iPhone Duo 13 hours 20 minutes
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 10 hours 6 minutes

That beats Samsung's latest foldable but trails a big slab iPhone, so heavy inner-screen users should expect to charge nightly.

iPhone Duo carrier deals and the Verizon Handoff fee

What US carriers are offering

Apple's iPhone Duo page lists carrier offers worth up to $1,200 at AT&T, up to $1,000 at T-Mobile and up to $840 at Verizon. Verizon also gives people who switch an Apple Watch Series 12 or an iPad with a qualifying new line, plus three months of Apple One.

Carrier Headline offer What you usually commit to
AT&T Up to $1,200 off Eligible trade-in, qualifying unlimited plan, multi-year bill credits
T-Mobile Up to $1,000 off Trade-in on a qualifying premium plan, multi-year bill credits
Verizon Up to $840 off, plus a watch or iPad for switchers Trade-in or new line on a qualifying plan

These are not instant discounts. The savings arrive as monthly bill credits, and if you leave or pay off the phone early, the remaining credits usually stop. Run the math first: if the required plan costs $20 a month more than your current one, a 36-month deal adds $720 in plan costs, which wipes out most of a $1,000 credit.

Before you sign, ask the rep this, word for word: "What is the total I will pay for the phone and plan over the full term, and what happens to my credits if I leave in year two?" Get the answer in writing, and compare it with Apple's carrier checkout, since offers can differ.

What is the Verizon iPhone Handoff fee?

iPhone Handoff is a new iOS 27 feature that lets two iPhones share one phone number, with only one active at a time. Think of the Duo for weekends and an iPhone 18 Pro for work. Both phones need iOS 27, and your carrier must support it, usually for a fee.

Carrier Monthly price Status on October 21, 2026
Verizon (US) $10 Coming soon, no date given
T-Mobile (US) $5 Available now
AT&T (US) Not offered No support announced
EE (UK) £5, or included on Full Works Plus Coming soon

At Verizon's rate, Handoff costs $120 a year, double T-Mobile's $60. The good news: you only pay if you want one number on two iPhones. If the Duo replaces your current phone, you do not need Handoff at all. Verizon confirmed the price and the coming-soon status in its iPhone Duo announcement.

Buying in the UK: SIM-free or contract?

In the UK, SIM-free means an unlocked phone bought outright, while a contract bundles the phone with a monthly plan, usually over 24 or 36 months. Because the Duo is eSIM-only, confirm your network supports eSIM before you buy SIM-free. EE is the first UK network to announce Handoff pricing.

Is the iPhone Duo worth it? Who should buy it now

Is the iPhone Duo worth it? For a specific buyer, yes. Its value comes from replacing two devices, not from beating an iPhone 18 Pro as a phone. You are a good fit if most of these describe you:

  • You carry a phone and a small tablet today. One Duo can replace both, which softens the $1,999 price.
  • You work from your phone. Split View runs two apps side by side, and Zoom, Slack and Netflix are already optimized for the larger screen. If you plan to keep an AI assistant open beside your documents, pick the right $20 AI plan first.
  • You read a lot. The matte inner screen cuts glare, and reviewers singled it out for long reading sessions.
  • You can absorb first-generation risk. You have room in the budget for a case and AppleCare+, and you do not mind waiting for some apps to catch up.

Try this test before you buy. For one week, note every time you reach for a tablet or laptop for something you would rather do on your phone. If it happens daily, the Duo solves a real problem. If it happens once a week, you are paying $1,999 for a novelty.

Who should wait for the iPhone Duo?

Waiting costs nothing but time. Hold off if any of these apply:

  • You rely on zoom photos or Face ID. An iPhone 18 Pro gives you a telephoto camera, Face ID and the same chip for $800 less.
  • Your daily apps are not optimized yet. Letterboxed apps waste the screen you paid for.
  • You want to write with Apple Pencil. Support is promised for later this year, not launch day.
  • You are buying it mainly for Siri AI. The new Siri is in beta, starts in English and will not be available in the EU at first. Apple also says server-based features have daily limits and that expanded access will cost extra later, so compare paid AI subscriptions before you build your workflow around one.
  • You keep phones for five years. No one knows yet how a first-generation hinge and folding screen will hold up over years of use. The IP68 rating helps, but Apple's warranty does not cover liquid damage.
  • You mostly want a bigger screen for games. The Duo is a strong gaming phone, but a dedicated handheld costs far less; see how Minecraft on Nintendo Switch 2 looks if that is your main use.

Before you buy: an iPhone Duo checklist

Copy this list and work through it before you tap Buy.

  1. Confirm your carrier supports eSIM, and Handoff if you want to share a number with a second iPhone.
  2. Back up your current iPhone and make sure you know your Apple Account password, because your eSIM transfers during setup.
  3. Get trade-in quotes from Apple and your carrier, and compare them with a private sale.
  4. Choose how to pay: in full, 0% installments, a lease or a carrier deal.
  5. Pick storage based on what you film and download, not on what feels safe.
  6. Add a case and decide on AppleCare+ at checkout, since the folding screen is the part you most want covered.
  7. When it arrives, test your 10 most-used apps on the inner screen while you can still return it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the iPhone Duo have Face ID?
No. The iPhone Duo uses Touch ID built into the side button, so you unlock it with a fingerprint whether the phone is open or closed. You can also unlock it automatically while wearing an unlocked Apple Watch. Reviewers say the switch from Face ID takes a few days to get used to, but Touch ID is handy when the phone lies flat on a desk.
Can I use a physical SIM card in the iPhone Duo?
No. The iPhone Duo is eSIM-only in every country, with support for two active eSIMs at once. Apple dropped the SIM tray to free up space for the battery. Before you buy, confirm your carrier supports eSIM. If you travel often, check that the networks you use abroad offer eSIM or travel eSIM plans, because you cannot insert a local physical SIM card.
Do I have to pay Verizon's $10 Handoff fee to use an iPhone Duo?
No. The $10 monthly fee only applies if you add iPhone Handoff, the optional iOS 27 feature that shares one phone number across two iPhones. If the iPhone Duo is your only phone, you pay your normal plan and nothing extra. Verizon lists the feature as coming soon, while T-Mobile already offers it for $5 a month.
Does the iPhone Duo work with Apple Pencil?
Yes, but not at launch. Apple says the iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil (USB-C) later this year, so you can take notes, sketch or mark up documents on either screen. That Pencil model does not offer pressure sensitivity, so it suits notes and markup more than detailed art. If Pencil support is your main reason to buy, wait until it ships.
Is the iPhone Duo waterproof?
It is water resistant, not waterproof. The iPhone Duo is rated IP68, which means it survived a depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes in lab tests. That protection can weaken with normal wear, and Apple's warranty does not cover liquid damage. Treat it like any premium phone: fine in rain or a quick splash, but keep it out of pools and the sea.

The bottom line

The iPhone Duo is the most ambitious iPhone in years and the most expensive. At $1,999 it makes sense if it replaces both your phone and a tablet and you can live with Touch ID, no telephoto lens and some unoptimized apps. If any of those are deal-breakers, an iPhone 18 Pro or a few months of patience will serve you better.
